King to Host Event Focusing on Prescription Painkillers
PORTLAND, Maine - Sen. Angus King is convening a second round table discussion focusing on the state's opiate epidemic.
King, who hosted the first event in Bangor in August, said Tuesday's session in Portland will be more narrowly focused on prescription painkillers as a gateway to addiction.
The Office of National Drug Control Policy says four in five heroin users started out by misusing or abusing prescription opioid pain medications. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 44 people in the U.S. die each day from an overdose of prescription pain medication.
King's office says more people die every day from drug overdoses than from highway crashes, and that the majority of drug overdose deaths are caused by prescription opioids and heroin.
