Saco Teacher Wins $25,000 Milken Award

SACO, Maine - An eighth-grade science teacher in Saco has won a $25,000 Milken Educator Award.

Michaela Lamarre was given a $25,000 check this morning at a school-wide assembly at Saco Middle School.

State education officials say Lamarre is the only Maine teacher to win the Milken Family Foundation award this year, given out to 40 educators nationwide.

"Through innovative ideas and teaching practices, Ms. Lamarre enriches students’ learning every day while serving as a role model for her peers," says Maine Acting Education Commissioner William Beardsley, in a statement.

Lamarre has been teaching for 12 years. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Maine at Farmington, and a master's degree from the University of New England.

The Milken Family Foundation has been recognizing outstanding elementary and secondary school educators with the award since 1987.

Barbara grew up in Biddeford, Maine. She earned a master’s in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a bachelor’s in English from the University of Southern Maine.
