PORTLAND, Maine — While Northern Maine had a number of snowstorms already this season, southern Maine and the rest of New England is preparing for its first round of winter weather. While parts of southern Maine saw only wet roads yesterday, much of the rest of Maine saw significant snowfall. National Weather Service Meteorologist Priscilla Serrara in Caribou says northern Aroostook County got ten inches of snow with the rest of the County getting 5 to 8. Millinocket in the middle of the state got 9 inches. Piscataquis County got between five and seven. Jackman also got around seven inches with Washington County seeing about 4 inches. Sarrara says parts of northern Maine could get some snow showers this morning.
"The winds are going to gust probably 20 to 25 miles an hour so we're looking for the northern and eastern parts of the state we're looking for blowing and drifting snow," Sarra said.
The National Weather Service predicts that an arctic front will race across northern Maine early this morning and usher in the coldest air mass of the season to date. Highs Monday will occur early this morning with steady or falling temperatures through the day accompanied by wind gusts to 30 mph.
Those wind gusts are very likely to send this snow airborne and create hazardous driving conditions in Aroostook county and well as parts of northern Penobscot county. Whiteouts and drifts across roadways are big concerns today.
NWS predicts wind chills well below zero in the north and single digits for Bangor and down east. The winds die off tonight and temperatures will plummet initially to subzero readings north and single digits for Bangor and Down East as a powerful high pressure system settles over the state. The lowest temperature readings are expected to be in the Allagash where minus 10 is expected.
