Chief of Naval Operations to Visit to Bath Iron Works

BATH, Maine - The Navy's top admiral is paying a visit to Maine's Bath Iron Works.

Adm. John Richardson, chief of naval operations, plans to tour the shipyard on Wednesday and meet with shipbuilders and executives.

His spokesman said it'll be a quick visit with no media availability.

The shipyard's largest union recently adopted a new labor pact ahead of the expiration of the old agreement to cut costs and become more competitive. The Navy has stressed that costs are going to be the driver on shipbuilding contracts going forward.

Bath Iron Works is currently testing the first-in-class Zumwalt.

It has a backlog of destroyers but the shipyard is concerned that there's a lack of future work. The shipyard plans to bid in March on Coast Guard cutters.
