Work Underway to Rehabilitate Site of Historic Submarine

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - A $1.2 million project to rehabilitate a site where a historic submarine sits is underway in New Hampshire.

The Portsmouth Herald reports that workers plan to rehabilitate the dry basin around the USS Albacore.

Phil Munck, president of the board of directors of the Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association, says crews working on the project will have to excavate material and then build the sides of the basin back up.

Munck says many submarines were built based on the success of the hull design of the Albacore, which was built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and commissioned in 1953.

He says the site will offer visitors a memorial garden to commemorate lost submariners.

The submarine and the museum are closed to the public. Work is expected to be finished by April.
