Third Republican Enters Maine's 1st District Primary Race

AUGUSTA, Maine - A third Republican has entered Maine's 1st District congressional primary.

Barry Stephens, of Scarborough, who works for a Swiss company that manufacturers heat recovery ventilation systems, says that he's running for Congress because he doesn't think incumbent Democrat Chellie Pingree represents a majority of the  District's voters.

"I think that I can bring some common sense, practical and useful plans and programs to bear," he says.

Stephens says the economy tops his list of key issues, and that he would also focus on the tax code, which he says caters to special interests and should be simplified.  Stephens says government has its place, but it's expanding into areas where it doesn't belong.

Stephens says he doesn't believe in big money in politics and has launched what he calls a "10 from 10,000" campaign: Only $10 donations are being accepted on his website.

Two other Republicans have filed papers in the primary race. They are Mark Irving Holbrook, of Brunswick, and Ande Smith, of North Yarmouth.

Ed is a Maine native who spent his early childhood in Livermore Falls before moving to Farmington. He graduated from Mount Blue High School in 1970 before going to the University of Maine at Orono where he received his BA in speech in 1974 with a broadcast concentration. It was during that time that he first became involved with public broadcasting. He served as an intern for what was then called MPBN TV and also did volunteer work for MPBN Radio.
