LEWISTON, Maine (AP) _ The Lewiston City Council is giving a developer another year to work out financial details of a proposed redevelopment of Bates Mill No. 5.
Developer Tom Platz said he's shooting for a 200,000-square-foot lease commitment before he can start the $70 million project to revamp the 100-year-old mill.
The Sun Journal reports that Central Maine Healthcare and the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA have expressed interest in roughly 75,000 square feet each, accounting for half of the 350,000-square-foot space.
Under the plan, Central Maine Medical Center would relocate its sports medicine and weight management offices, and the YMCA would give patients free, short-term memberships to a gym. There would be an indoor walking track, and a boutique grocery store.
