FAIRFIELD, Maine - A central Maine bookstore owner cashed in after selling a set of rare U.S. Postal Service stamps that brought in just under $60,000 at an auction in Fairfield.
The Morning Sentinel reports that Robert Sezak, owner of Re-Books in Waterville, sold a set of six "upright Jenny'' stamps issued by the Postal Service in 2013 for $59,205 to an absentee bidder last Tuesday.
The stamps call back to the Inverted Jenny, one of the biggest printing mistakes in the Postal Service's history. The Inverted Jenny, produced in 1918, were a series of 100 stamps that featured a Curtiss JN-4H biplane printed upside down.
When the accidental stamp was re-released, 100 sheets of the upright biplane were hidden in the 2.2 million stamps produced. Sezak bought his sheet for $12.
