New England Power Supply Procured to 2020

HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) _ The region's electric grid operator says New England should have sufficient energy to meet demand in 2019 and 2020.

ISO New England last week completed its annual forward capacity auction to secure energy resources that will be needed to meet projected demand. Officials say more than 1,400 megawatts of new generating capacity have been procured.

The power will help to replace at least 4,200 megawatts of current generating capacity that will be retired by 2020. That includes the Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth that is expected to close by 2017.

ISO has said that another 6,000 megawatts is at risk of leaving the system by the end of the decade.

ISO chief executive Gordon van Welie said competition at the auction was ``robust.''
