SMITHFIELD, Maine - A Maine town incorporated on Feb. 29, 1840, could soon hold Leap Year celebrations in February.
The Morning Sentinel reports that Smithfield, which bills itself as the state's only Leap Year town, is set to consider a proposal for annual celebrations at a Town Meeting on March 12.
The warrant item proposes holding regular celebrations by raising $500 a year.
The town has held a Leap Year town parade at least twice, including at Smithfield's 175th Anniversary Celebration last summer.
An extra day is added on to the end of February during leap years.
Town Administrative Assistant Nichole Clark says a first-ever Leap Year Social was scheduled for Monday evening at the Fairview Grange. The social includes desserts and coffee as well as a slideshow of last year's parade.
