Husson University Kicks Off Commencement Season Sunday

Thousands of students across Maine are preparing to receive their degrees this spring as commencement ceremonies roll out over the coming weeks.

Husson University will be handing out 775 receive degrees on Sunday.

“It will be the first time that we’ve actually combined the graduations,” says Husson Provost Lynne Coy-Ogan. “Historically we have a separate graduation ceremony for our students in southern Maine at our Westbrook site, and so now all of our students, from our Presque Isle site to our partnership with Maine community colleges and also Westbrook, will be here.”

Husson is expecting at least 5,000 people to fill the Cross Center in Bangor on Sunday.

Coy-Ogan says the school also wants travelers to be aware ahead of time of the closure of a portion of Interstate 395 in Bangor, which could cause significant transit delays.

Husson’s commencement speaker is independent U.S. Sen. Angus King, who will also receive an honorary doctorate.

UMaine will hold its commencement on May 14; Colby on May 22 with Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington as the speaker.

Bowdoin commencement is on May 28, and students at Bates College in Lewiston will graduate Sunday, May 29, with Georgia congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis the speaker.
