Study: Maine Among Worst States for Millennials

Maine ranks among the 10 worst states for millennials to live. That's according to a study from finance website MoneyRates.com.

The study looked at number of criteria, including jobs, debt, and rental prices. According to the study, one big problem for Maine is the availability of affordable rents.

Mike Tipping, of the progressive advocacy group Maine People's Alliance, agrees that there are barriers to young people getting established in Maine.

"Obviously rent is an issue, and other pieces come into the cost of living," Tipping says, "but what we really need are jobs that not just boost individuals who make a little bit higher wages, but really increase that wage floor and create jobs that boost our whole economy."

Tipping says Maine students also have the highest education debt rates in the nation.

The MoneyRates study also gives Maine low marks for its "youthfulness" and access to broadband services. Neighboring New Hampshire and Vermont also landed in the bottom ten.
