Maine Program Looks to Grow Doctors, Plants to Fight Disease

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A new residency program at Maine Medical Center hopes to grow the number of doctors in the state who are dedicated to helping Mainers avoid disease.

The program is a two-year residency in preventive medicine and it launched this month.

A spokesman for the American College of Preventive Medicine says it's the only one of about 70 preventive medicine residencies in the country to put a special focus on ``plant-based medicine.''

Program director Dr. Christina Holt says the program will partner with community groups that incorporate health and nutrition strategies into their work.

The hospital received a federal Health Resources and Services Administration grant of up to $950,000 over three years to launch the residency program. It is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
