Occupants of Portland Homeless Encampment Ordered to Leave

PORTLAND, Maine - Police are ordering the occupants of a homeless encampment in Portland to leave the area amid reports including domestic violence, arson and a child living there.

The Portland Press Herald reports police on Wednesday issued a formal "No Trespass Notice'' at the property known as "Tent City.'' Occupants must leave by Aug. 31.

Police are working with a social service agency to help connect the occupants with services for the needy, including emergency shelters. Some occupants say they avoid shelters though due to bedbugs, lice, scabies and crowds.

More than two dozen people had been living at the site, located in a wooded area near Interstate 95 and state Route 25.

Representatives from the two companies that own the land couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
