Archeologists Uncover Artifacts at 17th Century Maine Fort

BRISTOL, Maine - Maine officials say a small team of archeologists has uncovered artifacts from 17th century forts at Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site.
 
The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry says the archeologists' work at the site will continue until Friday. The site will be open to the public. They're doing their work at three forts located in midcoast Maine.
 
The state says archeologists have visited the site a few times since the 1970s, when they unearthed one area of the forts. The conservation department says the current two-week effort is an attempt to identify more of the fort structures.
 
The state says the fort dates to the 1670s, when citizens petitioned the Massachusetts colony government to build a fort for protection from the French and their Native American allies.
