Largest Horse Shelter In New England Reopens After Expansion

WINDHAM, Maine - New England's largest horse shelter has reopened after a $2 million expansion project. The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals opened its new Equine Rehabilitation Facility on Saturday in Windham. WGME-TV reports the expansion will help the shelter house horses seized by animal control officers during investigations.

Barn manager Jeff Greenleaf says it can take up to a year for emaciated horses to get back to full health. The nonprofit currently holds 41 horses on the property.

The new facility will allow the animals to go through training seven days a week regardless of weather or time.

CEO Meris Bickerford says the facility also has office space and an observation center for school trips. Bickerford says the change wouldn't have been possible without community support.
