Annual Beach To Beacon 10K Race Canceled

The annual TD Beach to Beacon 10K road race, which draws thousands of runners to Cape Elizabeth in August, has been canceled.

In a press release, organizers say ongoing COVID-19 concerns prompted the cancellation, as well as updated guidelines released Tuesday by Gov. Janet Mills.

TD Beach to Beacon President David Backer says the decision seemed somewhat inevitable, since the race was expected to bring out 6,500 runners.

“Combined with volunteers and with spectators, we probably have 8000-plus people who may end up at Fort Williams at the end of the race, and it just seemed impossible that there would be a way with social distancing for us to hold this event.”

Backer says the $55 race entry fee will be automatically refunded to all registered runners over the coming weeks. He says plans are to hold next year's race on the first Saturday in August.
