Northeast Firefighters Head For California To Battle Wildfires

CONCORD, N.H. - Some firefighters from New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and New York are heading to California to assist with fighting wildfires.

Firefighters were expected to leave Thursday for Ventura County, California, to help suppress the Thomas Fire in southern and central California, which has grown to 271,000 acres. The fire, which began Dec. 4, is responsible for two deaths and has destroyed at least 750 homes. The blaze was 60 percent contained and is now the second-largest in California history.

An exact number for the crew wasn't immediately available. The group will be deployed for 14 days. They will most likely be assigned to a division constructing fire line to assist with controlling the fire, as well as potentially assisting with structure protection.
