AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Conservative firebrand Bruce Poliquin's victory in the GOP primary in Maine's 2nd District comes as the traditional moderate Republicans who once controlled the party in New England struggle for viability.

Poliquin framed opponent Kevin Raye as a ``liberal'' who would be willing to compromise GOP values, like lower taxes. Raye, former chief of staff to centrist Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe, ran on his willingness to work across the aisle.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The Maine's Human Rights Commission has determined that a veteran Franklin County Jail guard fired for allegedly assaulting an inmate was not the victim of discrimination.

The commission on Monday voted 3-1 to uphold its investigator's finding of no reasonable grounds that discrimination occurred in the firing of Robert Shufelt, of Jay, let go in March 2012 after 23 years on the job.

FARMINGTON, Maine (AP) _ A Maine judge has ruled that a lawsuit brought by a Delaware family injured in a ski lift accident in 2010 can move forward.

Michael Katz, who suffered a broken back and traumatic brain injury, was the most seriously injured of the eight people hurt in the December 2010 accident at Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley. His daughters, 13 and 11 at the time, suffered back and head injuries.

They sued the ski area's operators and associated entities in October, seeking unspecified damages.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A Brunswick woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $300,000 from a nonprofit organization that received federal funds.

Stacey Backman pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Portland to federal program fraud and federal tax fraud.

Prosecutors say the 41-year-old Backman worked as a fund accountant at Coastal Enterprises Inc., a private nonprofit, charitable community development corporation and community development financial institution based in Wiscasset. That organization receives more than $10,000 in federal funds each year.

LePage Campaign Faces $210 Fine

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Maine Gov. Paul LePage's campaign is facing fines for failing to report some contributions on time.

The Maine ethics commission is seeking $210 from the Republican governor's re-election team for missing reporting deadlines. The campaign failed to file two reports of contributions exceeding $1,000 within 24 hours, as required.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The suspect in the fatal stabbing of a 92-year-old Waterville man will need to find a new lawyer.

Forty-four-year-old Roland Cummings made his first appearance on a murder charge in Kennebec County Superior Court in Augusta on Monday. Defense attorney William Baghdoyan represented Cummings, but told the judge a new attorney will have to be appointed, because he isn't taking murder cases.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The VA Maine Health Care System fared better than many other facilities in a system-wide audit, but hundreds of veterans still had to wait more than a month for appointments.

A May 14 audit found that 99 percent of doctor visits took place in 30 days or less in Maine. But 664 veterans had to wait more than a month. It also showed that new patients waited 36 days on average, and six had to wait 120 days or more.

All told, 47,698 appointments were scheduled.

BANGOR, Maine (AP) _ The Red Cross reports that a multi-unit apartment fire in Bangor displaced 18 people.

A Red Cross relief team is finding temporary housing and offering other support to 10 families after the Monday morning fire on Ohio Street.

The damage to the building's 12 apartments is being assessed.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Police in Portland, Maine, say a 46-year-old man illegally used several aliases to convince car dealerships to sell him cars with no money down.

Robert G. Steiner faces two counts of felony theft and four counts of aggravated forgery. Portland police announced his arrest on Monday and say he will likely face additional charges from other jurisdictions.

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) _ A Maine man who hid in the woods for a week after the fatal shooting of his girlfriend has made his first appearance in court.

Jesse Marquis, who's being held at Aroostook County Jail, was arraigned via video conference call at the district court in Presque Isle on Monday.

WAGM-TV reports that the judge read the complaint and Marquis was appointed two attorneys, but no indictment given. A bail hearing was set for June 13 in Caribou.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Portland residents are voting in a referendum to decide the fate of a half-acre park that has sparked a city-wide debate about the Maine city's commitment to open spaces.

The ballot question, if approved Tuesday, would add 35 open spaces to the city's list of protected lands and make it more difficult to sell them. The key piece is Congress Square Plaza, a half-acre plaza in downtown Portland. The city wants to sell most of the plaza to an Ohio-based hotel owner.

Liberal dealmaker Emily Cain and working-class advocate Troy Jackson square off in the Democratic primary on Tuesday. On the GOP side, establishment Republican Kevin Raye is taking on tea-party favorite Bruce Poliquin.

Polls close at 8 p.m.

Both races have pit candidates who pledge to be fighters in Washington against those who vow to break down political barriers.

Voters approved the referendum 4,888 to 4,605.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Tea-party favorite Bruce Poliquin has won the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District seat and will face Democrat Emily Cain in November.

Poliquin is a Harvard-educated businessman. He was beating establishment Republican Kevin Raye 55 percent to 45 percent Tuesday with 258 of 422 precincts reporting in unofficial returns.

A 73-year-old Maine man was seriously injured when his motorcycle struck a turning truck.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says Stanwood Horne of Rumford was riding his motorcycle on Norway Road in Harrison Saturday afternoon when the collision occurred.

Authorities said Horne didn't see the truck was making a right turn and attempted to go around it on the right.

They say Horne's motorcycle struck the truck as it was turning and he was ejected from the his motorcycle.
