Shirley Henry
Shirley Henry is the Managing Editor for Content Talent Strategy and Development for NPR News. In this role, she oversees a team focused on staff development and editorial training for NPR's content divisions. The team also works on talent recruitment for the content divisions, building and maintaining relationships with strong external candidates and high potential internal talent. In particular, Henry will lead development initiatives for NPR hosts and potential future hosts.
Henry was previously Deputy Managing Editor for Recruitment and Development. Before that, she served as Chief Washington Editor at NPR, overseeing all aspects of the Washington Desk from mid-2019 until the end of 2021, an incredibly busy and tumultuous time that included the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the federal government's response to it; and the 2020 presidential election and its aftermath, including the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Washington Desk's correspondents, editors and producers cover the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, the Justice Department, presidential campaigns and other electoral politics, and tell stories across all of NPR's broadcast and digital platforms.
Henry also served as Executive Producer of the NPR Politics Podcast, which transitioned from a twice-weekly podcast into a daily podcast under her leadership.
Henry came to NPR in September 2014 as a Senior Editor for the Washington Desk and served as Deputy Washington Editor from February 2015 through May 2019. During that time, she edited White House coverage and played a key role in helping shape the network's 2016 election coverage and in the creation of the politics podcast.
Before joining NPR, Henry worked at CNN in a number of capacities, including producing shows, field producing and managing coverage in CNN's Washington Bureau. In 2013 and 2014, she was the supervising producer of CNN's National Security Unit. She was also the editor of a blog at CNN.com that covered national security issues.
Henry graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Boston University where she received a bachelor's degree in journalism and a bachelor's degree in international relations. She also received a master's degree in public policy from Georgetown University.
