Judge Weighing Maine Campaign Contribution Limits

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A Maine judge is expected to issue a written decision by next week regarding a federal lawsuit that challenges a law limiting campaign contributions to independent candidates.

The Portland Press Herald reports that U.S. District Judge D. Brock Hornby heard arguments in the case on Tuesday.

Independents can only raise $1,500 per donor, while Democratic and Republican candidates can raise twice as much because they can accept funds for the primary and general elections.

Supporters of gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler, who filed the lawsuit last month, argue that the law is unconstitutional.

An attorney representing the Maine ethics commission, which is defending the law, said that it's not the federal courts' job to "fine-tune (contribution) limits.''
