New Maine Legislature to be Sworn In This Week

AUGUSTA, Maine — A new Maine Legislature is preparing to begin its work.

Newly elected lawmakers will be sworn in on Wednesday.

Wednesday's activities include voting for the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Senate president.

Democratic Rep. Mark Eves of North Berwick was nominated by his caucus for another term as speaker in the House. Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Michael Thibodeau of Waldo was chosen by his party to serve as Senate president.

Democrats remain in control of the House, but Republicans took the majority in the Senate.

The Legislature will also pick the state's three constitutional officers: the secretary of state, state treasurer and attorney general.

The real work won't begin until January when Gov. Paul LePage introduces his proposed budget. The issue will dominate the legislative session.
