WASHINGTON - Maine U.S. Sen. Susan Collins has been elected chair of the Senate Aging Committee, a committee she has served on since 1997.
Collins says there are three priorities for the committee in this congressional session. "One is the need for more biomedical research, particularly in the area of Alzheimer's disease and diabetes," she says. "Both are extraordinarily costly in terms of human suffering and to our health care system."
Collins says the panel will also focus on the growing problem of retirement security because more Americans are retiring with debt and little savings. She says a third priority is thwarting efforts by criminals - both within and outside the U. S. - who try to scam seniors out of what life savings they have accumulated.
"It seems that just every single day there is an another con artist that has come up with another scam that is directing at ripping off our seniors," Collins says.
