Saco Council Balks at Move to Fire Administrator Over Contract

SACO, Maine - The Saco City Council is moving not to fire a city administrator, despite a drive from elected officials who question the way the official's contract was negotiated.

Robert Michaud will continue serving as administrator of Saco, a position he had held since 1999. Michaud announced plans to retire last summer, but city councilors who support him persuaded him to stay with a new incentive-laden contract. The incentives include permission to live outside the city and drive a city-owned car.

The Saco City Council voted 4-2 against a motion to terminate the contract on Monday night. The Portland Press Heraldreports Councilor Eric Cote says the council renewed Michaud's contract because it "simply didn't want to mess around with transition.''
