AUGUSTA, Maine - A bill designed to reduce youth cancer risk by restricting the use of tanning booths by minors has failed in the Maine Senate.
Republican Eric Brakey said in the debate that current law requires parental permission and a photo ID for minors youngers than 18 to use tanning equipment.
"I do not think that this body should be subverting the authority of parents to make their own decisions.," Brakey said.
Proponents of the motion argued that tanning booths carry a warning comparable to cigarettes and minors can't buy those without without parental consent.
The Democratic-controlled Maine House approved LD 123, but the Senate failed to approve a motion to recede on a vote of 19 to 15.
