Maine Democratic Lawmaker Moving Out of District Resigns

AUGUSTA, Maine - A Democratic Maine lawmaker serving his fourth term in the Legislature is resigning because his family is moving out of his district.

Rep. Mike Shaw of Standish submitted his letter of resignation to House Speaker Mark Eves on Friday.

Shaw is a conductor on the Amtrak Downeaster. His family is moving out of District 23 to Freeport largely because of the Downeaster's planned move to Brunswick. He says family considerations also played a role in his decision.

Shaw says he wanted to leave the seat as soon as possible so voters can pick his replacement before lawmakers return in January.

Shaw served on the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee. He was House chair of the panel this year and the two previous years.
