WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin of Maine's 2nd District urged the House to support legislation he is co-sponsoring that would expand protection for women from job discrimination because they are pregnant.
"Women account for nearly half the workforce in our country, so it's particularly hard to believe that in today's society, women are still denied jobs or lose their jobs because they are pregnant," he says.
Poliquin says every time such discrimination occurs, it hurts the American economy and cannot be tolerated. He stressed the importance of a workplace environment that is supportive of pregnant workers so they do not fear losing their job because they are pregnant.
"Every time this happens to a mom, it hurts her, it hurts her family, and it hurts our economy," he says. "We must ensure that hardworking moms and moms-to-be are protected from unfair employment decisions."
