WASHINGTON - Congress is poised to approve a multi-year package of tax breaks totaling over $690 billion. And while he says he will vote for the package, Maine Sen. Angus King says it is not paid for and will add to the $18 trillion budget deficit.
"We are simply shifting the taxes from ourselves to our children," King said on the Senate floor today. "This bill should be called the 'Tax Your Grandchildren Act.' "
King says Congress should finally tackle tax reform, and pay for it.
He says Congress needs to set priorities and pay for them, and not continue to shift the current costs of government onto future generations.
But, while he doesn't like it, he says he will vote for it because it is tied to the omnibus spending bill that will keep the government funded.
