PORTLAND, Maine - Maine independent Sen. Angus King met today with President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.
King says the two discussed the limits of presidential authority, judicial philosophy, consensus building, and the politicization of the Supreme Court.
King says in many people's eyes the high court has become a lawmaking body, a third legislative branch.
"that's really not the way its supposed to be. The court is supposed to be interpreting the law, reading the Constitution, applying the Constitution to statutes and regulations, and being judges not politicians."
King says he believes Garland is a judicial conservative and not a judicial activist, something says he found reassuring. King says he was very impressed with Garland and thinks the Senate Judiciary Committee should hold a public hearing on Garland's nomination, a sentiment shared by King's Republican colleague, Sen. Susan Collins.
