AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine Republican Gov. Paul LePage is calling on the Natural Resources Council of Maine to meet with him to talk about job creation.
Last week, the environmental nonprofit held a news conference announcing that in late May, LePage's office tracked down a few hundred of its donors and sent them letters encouraging them to rethink their donations.
LePage's letter said the group's "job-crushing, anti-business policies'' keep rural Mainers mired in poverty.
The two sides have clashed over mining and solar energy issues.
In his weekly address, LePage defended the letters and said a balance between conservation and development can create "good jobs.''
LePage said that doesn't mean "short-term jobs for workers to install a couple of solar panels on your neighbor's roof at our expense.''
