LePage Continues 'War' On Maine Conservation Group
Gov. Paul LePage continued his assault on one of Maine’s premier conservation agencies Wedensday night by blaming the Natural Resources Council of Maine for keeping the state’s property tax rates among some of the highest in New England. During one of his regular town meetings in Richmond, LePage said the state’s property tax woes could be summed up in four letters.
“N-R-C-M, Natural Resources Council of Maine will do anything and everything to get property off the tax rolls and into land trusts,” LePage said. “They’ll do anything to destroy jobs. You’ve been dealing with them for decades and nobody has ever held them accountable. I bring it up and I’m the bad guy.”
LePage declared war on the NRCM during the Republican State Convention. Still, the agency’s leaders say they would be willing to meet with the governor for a constructive discussion on conservation issues.
