Collins Questions Trump's Labor Secretary Nominee at Confirmation Hearing

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine U.S. Sen. Susan Collins got her chance to question President Trump's labor secretary nominee Alex Acosta at his confirmation hearing Wednesday.

Collins told Acosta she is concerned about funding for the Trade Adjustment Act that provides job retraining programs.

“The so-called 'skinny budget' that was released last week proposes large cuts in the Department of Labor, but it is unclear what happens to TAA,” Collins said.

Collins also told Acosta the number of growing older workers and their problems should be an issue the Labor Department addresses.

Acosta responded that both are issues that need to be addressed, but suggested he will seek ideas from the states about what works for them, not mandating one program or another from Washington.

Collins has not taken a position on Acosta’s nomination.
