Members of the military and civilians working overseas can still vote in Maine elections, but must cast their ballots through the Secretary of State’s office. Based on the numbers of ballot requests, it appears that this year’s elections are drawing a lot of interest.
“We are more than double the requests we had for the 2014 gubernatorial,” says Deputy Secretary of State Julie Flynn.
Four years ago, Flynn says, just over 1200 Mainers overseas requested ballots, and so far this year the number is over 2500. That is still shy of presidential election year levels, but requests are continuing to come in at a brisk clip.
“So far this year we have 2,566 requests, and that is not counting what is in our dropbox and in our online ballot request system today,” Flynn says.
