1400 Receive Degrees in UNE Commencement

UNE
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt addressing UNE Class of 2015

More than 1400 degrees in liberal arts and sciences, medicine, and pharmacy were bestowed upon students at the University of New England on Saturday, in one of the biggest graduation ceremonies of the season.

"One's philosophy is not best expressed in words. It is expressed in the choices we make." said graduation speaker Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, quoting her grandmother, Eleanor Roosevelt, in her remarks to the class.

Roosevelt urged students to adopt a life of community involvement and caring.

"The world needs you, Class of 2015. UNE has prepared you. They've connected you for life. Make it a good life. Make it one you love."

Roosevelt, who serves as president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Northern New England was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.

Also honored for his contributions was Michael McCarthy, who has served as principal of King Middle School in Portland for 27 years. UNE President Danielle Ripich credited McCarthy with transforming an underperforming school into "a pillar of the Portland community."

UNE is a liberal arts and sciences university with an emphasis on health, medicine, and the humanities- and is home to Maine's only medical and dental schools.
It has two campuses in Maine and one in Tangier, Morocco.
