A patient unpacks a medical swab before she self-administers a COVID-19 test at a Walgreens pharmacy, Friday, July 31, 2020, in Newark.

Starting on Friday, 52 new rapid COVID-19 testing sites will open at Walgreens pharmacies across the state, and another three will come online next week.

That’s in addition to the 10 sites already open.

Mainers who are symptomatic can make appointments at drive-thru sites for free, where results can come back in as little as an hour.

The 300,000 BinaxNOW rapid antigen tests are part of a federal allocation and will be distributed to Walgreen’s locations from Madawaska to Kittery.

Another 100,000 are being distributed through an application process to schools and high-risk settings.
