Camden Hills is First High School to Drop Out of Sports Season

ROCKPORT, Maine- The athletic department at Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport says that due to ongoing threats from the COVID-19 pandemic, the school will not participate in interscholastic sports this fall.

In a Facebook post made Friday, school officials wrote that keeping the school safely open for learning was its top priority, and the conclusion had been reached that league competition with other schools posed too much of a risk.

In a follow up post, the school's athletic director, Jeff Hart, described it as one of the "saddest days" in his professional career. The school says it intends to create an intramural sports program so students can still play.

Camden Hills is the first high school to publicly declare its intention to pull out of sports this year.

Meanwhile, the Maine Principals' Association is still debating whether or how interscholastic play might be safely conducted for the upcoming school year.

This week, the MPA announced that it would seek further guidance from state health officials on the matter.

The MPA plans to announce a decision on the high school sports season on Aug 27.
