Can Conservation Succeed with 9 Billion People?

Dr. Joel Cohen of Rockefeller University, and Mike Tetreault, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine, explore the effects of human population growth on our planet, resources and future on Speaking in Maine.

This insightful exploration of human population and nature preservation will generate debate about how, despite demographic trends, humanity has the power to change its course. The United Nations estimates the Earth’s population will expand to 9 billion by 2050. Virtually all of that increase will be in the cities of today's poor countries while the world's rural population will level off and begin to decline. Given the complex interactions between human civilization and nature, what challenges and opportunities do these trends pose for conservation in the coming decades?
Dr. Joel Cohen is the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of Populations at The Rockefeller University.
Mike Tetreault is the Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine.

This talk was sponsored by The Nature Conservancy of Maine and the World Affairs Council of Maine. It was recorded April 28, 2010 at the Portland Museum of Art.
