New U.S. Census numbers show that Cumberland County in Maine is the fastest-growing county in the state, with a 2.9 percent increase between 2010 and 2015.
Meanwhile, Aroostook County lost the most population with about 4.5 percent. Washington County lost 3.75 percent of its population.
Cumberland County Manager Peter Crichton says southern Maine offers a lot of work opportunities, good schools and is close to Boston.
“I think you have in our particular area of the state, a critical mass to be able to attract people to want to be able to live in Cumberland County, and raise their children there,” he says.
Crichton says most of the jobs created in Maine since the 1990s were in just two southern Maine counties: York and Cumberland.
