Closed Portland Church Sold to Jewish Organization

PORTLAND, Maine — A Roman Catholic church closed when the Diocese of Portland merged several parishes has been sold to a Jewish organization.

Steve Brinn, president of the executive committee of the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine, says his organization has signed a purchase-and-sales agreement to buy the St. Patrick church property.

The property has been on the market for nearly four years and the last service there was in May 2013. The asking price was almost $1.6 million, but Brinn did not disclose the purchase price.

A previous deal to sell the church to an adjacent shopping center fell through.

Brinn tells the Portland Press Herald the Jewish Community Alliance will probably rebuild on the site. He says the organization needs space for offices, community gatherings, child care and charity work.
