Community bands..or 'town bands' in Maine have their roots in military ensembles dating back to colonial times. before the emergence of radio and other forms of popular entertainment, community bands were at the center of small town life......and even city life. as Maine prepares to celebrate the nation's birthday this friday, community bands around the state are rehearsing for concerts on the green, or on parade floats. its a tradition that's survived over multiple generations, and is one of the remaining istitutions that bring together neighbors of all ages and backgrounds through a common bond of music. and, say my guests, these bands are one way that we continue to keep the performance of music a part of our daily lives. i'm Keith shortall and today on the program we'll explore the rich history of community bands in maine..and discuss the importance of music...at any age.
