Cumberland County has joined three other regions of Maine that are designated “yellow” as part of the state’s color-coded health advisory system for schools.
The designation means that the county is at an elevated risk of COVID-19 transmission, with public health officials recommending that schools reduce class sizes and cancel any extracurricular activities.
Cumberland joins York, Androscoggin and Oxford counties in the yellow category. In an emailed statement, state officials say that all four counties are currently experiencing rising positivity rates.
The state has detected 546 cases of COVID-19 connected to Maine’s K-12 schools over the past 30 days. But public health officials continue to say that data suggest that transmission of the virus is significantly lower in schools than in the general population.
