Data Shows Abortion Rate in New England is Declining

By Amy Anthony, The Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Data compiled by The Associated Press shows the number of abortions performed annually in New England is declining, echoing a nationwide trend. But at least two groups attribute the drop to different factors.

Between 2010 and 2013, Rhode Island saw the biggest decrease in abortions, from 4,181 to 3,251 — a 22.2 percent drop. Connecticut had the second-largest decrease, between 2010 and 2014, from 13,438 to 10,629 — a 20.9 percent drop.

Abortions have also decreased in Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont. New Hampshire does not compile comprehensive abortion data.

Planned Parenthood of New England CEO Judy Tabar says accessible, effective birth control and comprehensive sex education programs are the most important factors in reducing abortion.

Rhode Island Right to Life Executive Director Barth Bracy attributes the decline to a generation that is more anti-abortion because of frequent ultrasounds.
