PORTLAND, Maine - A protest by U.S. House Democrats continued this morning as Republican leadership adjourned the session early and departed the chamber.
That was a move Maine 1st District Rep. Chellie Pingree says runs counter to the democratic process. Pingree was among those who joined in the protest, which eventually came to an end early this afternoon.
"I think it's always worth it, in a sense that it disrupts the process. I mean, you saw a week or two ago when Sen. Murphy from Connecticut did a filibuster on the Senate floor and he got an agreement to have some votes - they took four votes on gun bills," Pingree says. "Ad while none of them passed, you have Sen. Collins working on a compromise now and that's, in a sense, how you move that forward."
Sen. Collins made another pitch for her compromise plan this afternoon on the floor of the Senate.
Pingree notes that, unlike the Senate, the House doesn't have a filibuster process.
