Education Department Signs on with Test Company

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The Maine Department of Education has signed up New Hampshire-based Measured Progress Inc. for new statewide English and math tests given to students in third through eighth grades.

The Maine Department of Education is paying the company $4.14 million to develop and administer the computerized tests.

The company also will administer the SAT for high school juniors. That test will be done on paper.

This year, the Maine Legislature voted to drop the Smarter Balanced test used by 18 states because educators and parents said the test was flawed and difficult to administer and take. The new tests will be an hour shorter than the old tests.
