Environmentalists Withdraw Appeal of Bingham Wind Farm

AUGUSTA, Maine — An environmental group fighting a Somerset County wind farm has abandoned its appeal of the state's decision to grant a license for the project, clearing the way for construction.

The Kennebec Journal reports that withdrawal of the appeal filed by Friends of Maine's Mountains means Blue Sky West can build a $398 million, 56-turbine wind farm in Bingham, Mayfield Township and Kingsbury Plantation.

The Maine Board of Environmental Protection was scheduled to hear the appeal Thursday, but that meeting was canceled.

Friends of Maine's Mountains said in a statement that it withdrew the appeal due to "the dim prospects" of overturning the state license. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has also cleared the project.

The organization says it still hopes to have some influence on the wind farm.
