Finalists Pitch Charter School Proposals to Maine Commission

AUGUSTA, Maine - Two groups hoping to open charter schools have pitched their proposals ahead of next month's vote from the Maine Charter School Commission.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Acadia Academy in Lewiston-Auburn and Snow Pond Arts Academy in Sidney went over details of their proposals before the commission Monday during interviews and public hearings.

The commission took no action, but will vote Nov. 17 on whether to enter contract negotiations with either school. If a contract is signed, the school is granted a charter by the state and would open in fall 2016.

State law allows a maximum of 10 charter schools. Maine already has five brick-and-mortar charter schools and two virtual charter schools. More than 1,500 students attend charter schools in Maine, which has about 184,000 total students.
