First Wind Vows to Appeal Permit Denial

First Wind says it will appeal the state's denial of a permit for a 16-turbine development in the Downeast Lakes region.

The company will argue before the Maine Supreme Judicial court that the Department of Environmental Protection made a mistake, when it declined to sign off on the Bowers Wind project last year.

DEP officials refused to issue a permit because they said views of the turbines would have an adverse impact on the scenic character of nearby lakes.

This spring, the Maine Board of Environmental Protection refused to overturn DEP's decision. So now, First Wind's Matt Kearns says the company is taking its case to the state's highest court.

The Partnership for the Preservation of the Downeast Lakes Watershed, which fought the project, has applauded the state for blocking the project.

But First Wind says most locals and business owners in the region favor the development because it would bring much-needed jobs to the region.
