AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ A number of Maine state parks and recreational areas will be free on Fathers' Day. Technically, it's Maine Residents' Day at the Bureau of Parks and Lands.
“June is ‘Get Outdoors Month’ and Maine State Parks get you out there." says Department of Agriculture , Conservation, and Forestry Commissioner, Walt Whitcomb. "Father’s Day could be a lot of fun at any of our parks and historic sites.”
The department says most parks and historic sites will be free for visiting as a way of thanking Mainers, and honoring Dads, for their support of the state parks system. Popular activities include hiking, swimming, boating, and geocaching. Also popular is the Fort Knox State Historic site which is part of the free parks day.
There is some fine print however. Free admission does not apply to Acadia National Park- which is part of the National Parks System- or Baxter State Park , which is a separate entity. Also not included in the state park open admission, is the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, Maine Wildlife Park, Peacock Beach, Scarborough Beach, Swan Island, Penobscot River Corridor, and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory.
