CUTLER, Maine - Maine game wardens say they rescued two hikers stranded on a trail overnight. Authorities say the 53-year old and the 73-year old began hiking the Bold Coast Trail in Cutler along with two dogs shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday. WABI-TV reports the women hiked for nearly three miles before realizing they had underestimated the length and difficulty of the trail.
They called for help around 5 p.m. Sunday night, telling authorities they had no food, water or flashlights. Wardens were able to determine the hiker's location before their cell phones died.
For the next five hours, rescue workers from various agencies hiked to reach the women, and then helped them back over the icy trail system.
Officials say the hikers arrived safely back at their vehicles around 2 a.m. Monday.
