Glamour Magazine Names Maine Transgender Student One of 50 "Hometown Heroes"

A transgender teen who made headlines in Maine when she won a battle with the Orono school district over use of the girls' bathroom, has been named one of Glamour Magazine's "hometown heroes."

Nicole Maines, 17, is among 50 women the magazine chose from each state for inspiring other women and making a difference.

Maines, who successfully fought the Orono district's requirement that she use the staff bathroom, told the magazine that when she won the case "it felt like this huge weight was lifted off."

Maines said that she's proud that the case sets a precedent for other transgender students.  She has signed a book deal, according to the magazine, and plans to continue advocating, saying that "it would always be a part of my life."

Nicole's father, Wayne Maines, released a statement Tuesday on the award.

"Nicole is honored to be recognized as one of the nation's 50 Phenomenal Women in Glamour magazine," he writes." Representing the State of Maine in this way is a memory she will always treasure, and keeps her moving forward in her quest for equality. She hopes that this recognition will convince other young women in Maine and across the nation to advocate for change.  As her parents we are very proud of her strength, commitment and courage."

Barbara grew up in Biddeford, Maine. She earned a master’s in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a bachelor’s in English from the University of Southern Maine.
